In partnership with Teeple Architects Inc., Architecture | Tkalcic Bengert has been commissioned to design a new building façade, envelope renewal, and necessary facility upgrades for the Stanley A. Milner Library. This six-storey, 244,750 sq. ft. facility is located in downtown Edmonton, directly opposite City Hall, and serves as the main branch for the Edmonton Public Library. The library is connected to the existing underground Capital Line LRT and downtown pedway system through the library’s parkade structure beneath the building.

With the exception of an addition to the north side of the building in 1998 as well as various interior renovations and lifecycle replacements, the original core building and envelope remains, more or less, as it did when it was originally built in 1967. An innovative design has been proposed for the renewal, which introduces a fresh face to a structure with a vital civic role in the Edmonton Downtown Arts District while keeping sustainability at the forefront. The renovation will bring the building up to the mechanical, electrical, fire safety, interconnected floor space, and seismic requirements of the current Alberta Building Code. Upgrades to the lighting and control systems will allow the structure to achieve a minimum LEED-NC Silver certification. More importantly, the new design clearly reflects the Edmonton Public Library’s values and fulfills its contemporary program needs.
