Location: Edmonton, AB
The Hub Cigar project involved the replacement of the landmark Hub Cigar Store on Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue. The client determined that a historical preservation of the fire-damaged building was structurally and economically unfeasible. With this, a new building was developed with extensive study of building façades which would best integrate into the surrounding historical context (the Whyte Avenue streetscape) and architectural guidelines of the area.
Although not required, Architecture | Tkalcic Bengert engaged the Planning Department and historical planners to comment on proposed massing and building façade configurations which were then shared for comment from the community. The new building was to be nondescript, humble respectful and modest when compared to its context. Historic proportions, detailing, datum lines and materials were factors which drove the final solution.
We are proud to say that, today, one can drive by this project without noticing it—a true testament to a successful integration of a façade into its streetscape.
